Andrew C. Hughey joined Texas Southern University in 2010. As General Counsel Mr. Hughey is the Chief Legal Officer for Texas Southern University. He supervises a staff of attorneys, coordinates services to all units of the University and provides legal advice to the Board of Regents, University President, Administrative Officers, Academic Deans, Faculty, and Staff, in their official capacities on matters involving or affecting the University and its divisions. Prior to his arrival at Texas Southern University he served as General Counsel and Secretary to the Board of Trustees at Central State University for 12 years. He also served Central State as an Adjunct Professor in its College of Education. Prior to joining Central State University, Mr. Hughey was Associate General Counsel at the University of Pittsburgh for 13 years. He also served as Adjunct Professor of Law at Duquesne University School of Law and was an Instructor of Legal Studies at the University of Pittsburgh for many years. Additionally, he was a Civil Service Commissioner for the City of Pittsburgh. Mr. Hughey is a member of the National Association of College and University Attorneys where he served on the Board of Directors, and has served as chair of its Committee on Continuing Legal Education. He also served as a member of the Steering Committee for the Dayton Ohio Dialogue on Race Relations and as Trustee for the Dayton Regional Transit Authority. Mr. Hughey received his BA degree from the University of Pittsburgh and his JD from Duquesne University School of Law.
Tammye Curtis-Jones joined the Office of General Counsel in 2006. Prior to that, she served as an Assistant Attorney General with the Office of the Attorney General of the State of Texas and also worked as an Assistant General Counsel for the State Bar of Texas. Tammye has had experience with the U.S. Department of Education as a Staff Attorney in the Civil Rights Office. Additionally, Tammye has significant experience as a mediator. Tammye earned her B.S. from Sam Houston State University and her J.D. from Texas Southern’s Thurgood Marshall School of Law. Tammye has broad experience in litigation, employment law, family law and education law. She is a member of the National Association of College and University Attorneys where she served on the Membership Committee and currently serves on the Committee on Legal Education. In her capacity as the Associate General Counsel, Tammye assists with the supervision of staff, assists with coordinating services to all units of the University and assists with providing legal advice to University administration and staff, in their official capacities on matters involving or affecting the University.
Kenneth A. McKanders joined Texas Southern University’s Office of General Counsel in 2011. Prior to his arrival at Texas Southern University, he served as General Counsel at Eastern Michigan University (EMU) for 22 years. During the period of his EMU employment he also served as a part-time Lecturer within the Departments of Leadership and Counseling and Associated Health Professions. Prior to EMU, he served as Executive Director of Legal Affairs at Wayne County Community College and as Assistant General Counsel at Wayne State University. He is a member of the National Association of College and University Attorneys (NACUA) and has served on its Board of Directors. He has chaired and/or served on several NACUA committees and has made presentations on a variety of legal topics at NACUA conferences and workshops. In 2009 he was a recipient of NACUA’s Distinguished Service Award. He obtained his J. D. degree from Wayne State University and his B. A. degree in Political Science from Michigan State University. In his capacity as Associate General Counsel, Ken assists with the coordination and delivery of legal services to all units of the University and assists with providing legal advice to University administrators and staff, in their official capacities on matters involving or affecting the University.
Cheryl Cash serves the University as Assistant General Counsel. Ms. Cash brings a diverse range of experience to the office, having worked for several years in the private sector and with the City of Houston. As a Senior Assistant City Attorney, Ms. Cash had extensive experience in the field of Labor & Employment law. She conducted many arbitration proceedings and litigated discipline & termination hearings, whistleblower and Title VII claims in state and federal district and appellate courts. Ms. Cash graduated with honors from The Catholic University of America in Washington DC with a Bachelors of Science in Nursing. She obtained her Juris Doctor from the University of Maryland in Baltimore. Working in the Office of General Counsel since 2009, Ms. Cash assists with coordinating services to all units of the University and assists with providing legal advice to University administration and staff, in their official capacities on matters involving or affecting the University. She is a member of the Labor & Employment Law Section of the State Bar of Texas and the National Association of University and College Attorneys.
Kedric has been with the Office of General Counsel since May 2002. Prior to that, he worked for the City of Houston Municipal Court system. Kedric previously worked in the University’s Department of Academic Affairs under the direction of Dr. Bobby Wilson and is a graduate of Texas Southern University with a B.A. degree in Administration of Justice.
Charkethia came to the Office of General Counsel in 2009. She has several years of human resource and accounting experience. Charkethia is a graduate of Texas Southern University with a B.A. degree in Accounting.
