William “Randy” Bates, Jr., Esq. to be honored by Texas Southern University

TSU alumnus and Grand Polemarch for Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. William "Randy" Bates will receive the "Excellence in Achievement Award" from Texas Southern University for years of outstanding service to education and the community.  The award will be presented during half time of the TSU vs. Southern Men's game this Thursday, February 28th. Game time is set for 8:00 p.m.

Bates earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from the Ohio State University and in 1981 earned his Juris Doctor from Thurgood Marshall School of Law at Texas Southern University.  He founded the law firm of Bates & Coleman, PC, which concentrates in Public Finance Law.  He is licensed to practice law in the states of Texas and Missouri.

Bates was elected Freshman Class President at Thurgood Marshall School of Law.  He was the first Black to be selected Law Student Director for the Texas Young Lawyers Association, representing all law students in the State of Texas.

He is a charter member of the 100 Black Men of Metropolitan Houston, Inc. and has served on numerous boards of directors.  He was the first Black to be appointed and later elected to the Board of Trustees of the Lone Star College System.  He was later the first Black to be elected Board Chairman. Chairman Bates oversees a district with a $69 billion tax base, a $275 million annual budget, is 85% Anglo and serves 90,000 students.  Bates is currently serving his third term as chairman of the Board.

Bates was named "Outstanding Texan" in the field of education by the Texas Legislative Black Caucus and received the Mayor's Distinguished Award by the city of El Paso, Texas.  He has received a number of other awards.

April 1971, he was initiated into Zeta Chapter at the Ohio State University.  He has served the fraternity in the Southwestern Province, as a local chapter Polemarch, Province Board of Director, Senior Province Vice Polemarch, Province Polemarch.  Bates has served the Grand Chapter as a member of the Grand Board of Directors, and Senior Grand Vice Polemarch.  He currently serves as our Grand Polemarch (National President).

Grand Polemarch Bates is a life member of the fraternity and the Southwest Province.  As Grand Polemarch he will become the first Grand Polemarch to preside over a Grand Chapter Meeting (National Convention of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc.) in his home town.  The 81st Grand Chapter Meeting will convene in Houston during August 6-11, 2013.  Over 5,000 Kappas and upwards of 10,000 family members and friends will meet in Houston and experience the Houston Hospitality, culture, dining pleasures and night life.

Bates is married to the former Glenda Underwood and has three sons, Life Member Lamont, and future Kappas William and Jonathan.
