TSU and Jack Yates Form Partnership to Help Students

Determined to strengthen the academic and social ties between neighboring Cleburne St. campuses, officials from Texas Southern University met with Jack Yates High School administration July 23rd,to consecrate a new partnership that will prepare 11th and 12th grade students for college while showing them TSU’s value as a institute of higher education located right in their neighborhood.

Following the vision and commitment of TSU President, Dr. John Rudley, 16 representatives from Texas Southern, including University Executive Vice-President Dr. James Douglas, pledged their commitment to Yates principal Marla Sheppard to provide academic tutoring for students and student-athletes, long-term mentoring and relationship building with students, parent engagement, and help revitalizing various campus youth groups. Dr. James Ward, TSU’s Dean of Communications, has also pledged to help revitalize the Yates communications program. In addition, all of TSU’s deans will be involved in developing students and will offer an academic scholarship to a deserving student that plans to attend Texas Southern.    

“We are very excited about this partnership and believe that it will be very productive for our students,” said Sheppard. “I am very appreciative of the opportunity.”

“We want to show Yates students that TSU is not just a school across the street, but it is another world that they will experience and conveniently we are just across the street,” said Brian Armstrong, TSU’s Director of Admissions.
