Toni Morrison among 2012 Medal of Freedom Recipients
Toni Morrison, who started her academic career at Texas Southern University, will be one of this year’s recipients of the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation’s highest civilian honor. The Medal of Freedom is presented to individuals who have made a significant contribution to the cultural or national interests of the United States.
The celebrated novelist and author of Song of Solomon, Jazz, and Beloved, for which she won a Pulitzer Prize, and is the first African American woman to win a Nobel Prize in 1993.
Toni Morrison, professor and novelist studied humanities at Howard and Cornell Universities, followed by an academic career at Texas Southern University, Howard University, Yale and Princeton.
