Student Health Insurance:

All students attending Texas Southern University, who are enrolled for 6 or more credit hours (3 Hours for summer sessions) are eligible to participate in the university-sponsored health insurance plan. Students who purchase coverage must actively attend class for at least the first 31 days after his/her effective date of coverage. To enroll in the university-sponsored student health insurance plan, go to www.studentinsurance.com/Schools/TX/TSU/ (domestic students) or www.studentinsurance.com/Schools/TX/TSUI/ (international students), click on "enroll" and  follow the instructions provided on the website.

TSU requires the following students to have health insurance:  

  • Students living in university sponsored dorms or apartments
  •  International Students
  • Students participating in club or intramural sports
  •  Students participating in university sponsored travel

International students and students living in university sponsored housing will automatically be enrolled in and billed for the university-sponsored health insurance plan. These students will have an opportunity to apply for a waiver, by providing proof of private health insurance. Please check with Educational Markets or  Student Health Services for deadlines to apply for the waiver. The charge for the university-sponsored health insurance will be removed for approved waivers only.

Applying For A Waiver:

If you live in TSU-sponsored housing (dormitories or apartments), AND you already have private health insurance (including Medicaid), and you want to opt out of the university sponsored student health insurance plan, log onto:

AND COMPLETE THE FOLLOWING STEPS: 

Step 1   Click on “waiver” under quick links

Step 2   Accept the terms and create an account

Step 3   Supply the requested information about your private health insurance.

Step 4   Submit the waiver application online and print a copy for your records. You will receive an e-mail approving or denying your waiver.

Step 5  Once approved the fee will be removed from your account.
