The Board of Regents and the Presidential Search Committee of Texas Southern University invite nominations and applications for the position of President. The President serves as the chief executive officer of the institution, reporting to the Board of Regents, according to policy set by the Board of Regents.

 

Texas Southern University, a special purpose institution for urban programming has a history that dates back to 1927. On March 3, 1947, the Texas State Senate of the 50th Legislature passed Senate Bill 140 providing for the formal establishment of the institution, including a law school, to be located in Houston. Thus was born Texas State University for Negroes; its name changed on June 1, 1951 to Texas Southern University.

 

TSU’s current academic curriculum offers over 120 baccalaureate, masters and doctoral degree programs in ten schools and colleges. Texas Southern is heralded for its pioneering spirit, having been the first Historically Black College and University (HBCU) to house a law school and is one of only two comprehensive HBCUs in the world. It distinguishes itself as one of the leading producers of African American scholars in the nation, with a current enrollment of more than 11,000 undergraduate and graduate students from across the world and has awarded more than 38,000 degrees during its history. Although the University was initially established to educate African Americans, it has become one of the most ethnically diverse institutions in Texas.

 

Texas Southern University offers Bachelor’s, Master’s and Doctoral degree programs in the following academic colleges and schools: the College of Liberal Arts and Behavioral Sciences; the College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences; the College of Science and Technology; the College of Education; the Barbara Jordan-Mickey Leland School of Public Affairs; the Tavis Smiley School of Communication; the Thurgood Marshall School of Law; the Jesse H. Jones School of Business; the College of Continuing Education; and the Graduate School. Other programmatic emphases are found in the Center for Excellence in Urban Education, the Center for Transportation Training and Research, the Center on the Family, and a variety of special programs and projects. Currently, Texas Southern is staffed by 516 faculty members and 571 support personnel. More than 11,000 students, representing ethnically and culturally diverse backgrounds are currently enrolled at the University. Texas Southern University is situated on 150 acres in the heart of downtown Houston, America’s fourth-largest city. Characterized by a diverse population, vibrant business climate, an outstanding performing and visual arts community and arguable unparalleled quality of life, Houston not only maintains its position as the world’s energy capital but has also become a global center for industries focusing on state-of-the-art technology, aerospace, petrochemicals, electronics, manufacturing and software development.
