STUDENT HEALTH SERVICES

The Student Health Center offers medical care and educational programs to all students currently enrolled at Texas Southern University. Students who have a valid TSU ID card are eligible for clinic services. All new and transfer students are asked to submit a completed health form with proof of current immunizations before class registration. This information will aid the staff in identifying at risk students as well as enhancing services provided. If you have not received the health form, it is available from the Center or by download from the website.

The Student Health Center is located off Tierwester Street on parking lot D. To provide care when needed, the clinic is open year-round and operates on a walk-in basis. The nurses are on duty Monday-Friday from 8:00am-5:00pm. The physician is available from 9:00am-10:00am and 2:00pm-5:00pm daily. Students may contact the clinic at (713) 313-7173.

The Center is designed and equipped to render service for minor and acute ailments/injuries. On hand medications and medical supplies available at the clinic are dispensed free of charge to all students with a valid ID card for the current semester.

For services beyond the scope of the University physician, students are referred to local health care providers. Expenses for services of these providers are the responsibility of the student, not the University. However, consultations made within the university are free of charge.

Information from your medical records is not available to anyone without your written consent or a court ordered subpoena. Federal regulations, known as “HIPAA” (Health Insurance Portability an Accountability Act), require that medical records be kept confidential to protect your privacy.

The Health Center does not issue routine excuses from class or work.

INSURANCE:

Students who reside in University dormitories are provided a basic hospitalization and accident insurance plan; the premium is included in the housing fee. This plan is available to ALL University students for a small fee.  For information, please contact the Health Center.

After Clinic hours and on weekends, residence hall students should report any emergency situation or illness to the Dormitory Director. Students living in other university housing should contact Campus Security at (713)313-7000 for emergency situations.

HEALTH AWARENESS PROGRAMS:

HIV counseling and testing is available in the Center weekly. In an effort to promote a healthy lifestyle, the Center provides informative health programs throughout the fall and spring semester. Information regarding these programs will be posted campus wide.

Meningitis: Know Your Risk

The Texas Senate Bill 31 requires public schools to provide all students and parents with information relating to bacterial meningitis. This information is to inform parents about the symptoms of meningitis and what to do in the event that a student is diagnosed with bacterial meningitis. The Texas Department of Health stresses that meningitis is not a widespread problem with students who are in public schools. The population most at risk for contracting bacterial meningitis is college freshmen living in dormitories. As a service to TSU students, the Health Center offers the vaccination for a competitive price at the beginning of the fall semester. For further information, students and families may contact the Health Center.
