Captain Roscoe Edwards Receives Pioneer Award

captCaptain Roscoe Edwards received the 2014 Pioneer Award from the Organization of Black Aerospace Professionals (OBAB) and was inducted into the OBAB Hall of Fame. Edwards was selected and recognized because of his reputation of promoting and recruiting African Americans into the airline industry.

Among his many achievements in his 30-year aviation career was the creation of the non-profit FAA approved Raiders-Tigers Flying Club (a combination of Sterling High School and Texas Southern University mascots.) Through this flying club, Edwards created a pipeline for students at Sterling Aviation High School to enroll in Texas Southern’s Aviation Management program to earn their degrees. He arranged for students to do internships at Continental Express Airlines as well as provided scholarships for 737 jumbo jet training both of which gave students opportunities to land full time jobs after graduation. Several of his former students have broken barriers in the aviation industry.

Captain Edwards serves as the Director of Flight Operations of TSU’s aviation program.
