The Texas Southern University Children’s Theatre Camp will present ‘The African Talking Drum’to the university and community on July 29, 2015. The production will take place in the Grandville Sawyer Auditorium on Wednesday, July 29, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. All tickets are $3.00 and may be purchased at the door. The play was written by Celeste Bedford-Walker and directed and adapted by TSU Music/Theatre alumna, Erika R. Walton.
While playing in the inner city, Brandon, Brea and the neighborhood children stumble upon a pile of trash and notice a tattered drum. Mesmerized by its outer appearance, the children begin beating the drum and are magically invaded by a processional of African royalty. The African Talking Drum, takes the children on a magical history lesson with the hope they gain an appreciation of their rich heritage and culture.
The TSU Children’s Theatre Camp was established in 1999 by Dr. Dianne Jemison Pollard to give TSU theatre students experience in working with children and give parents options on where to send their children to learn about the world of theatre. Pollard believes that children exposed to a college campus environment at an early age are more likely to attend college when they graduate from high school.
