The Honorable Derrick M. Mitchell (Houston, Texas)

 

Regent Derrick Mitchell is the Immediate Past Board Chair. He was appointed to the Texas Southern University Board of Regents in 2015 by Governor Greg Abbott and voted Chairman in 2016.

 

Mitchell is a Partner in the Business and Regulatory Section of the law firm of Bracewell LLP in Houston. He serves on the firm's Political Action Committee and is a member of the Public Finance practice. A native of Amarillo, Texas, Derrick received a Bachelor of Business Administration in Finance degree from the University of Houston in 1996 and his Juris Doctorate from the University of Houston Law Center in 1999.

 

Mitchell currently serves on the Board of Directors for several agencies, including the Gulf Coast Rail District, Scenic Houston and Greater Houston Partnership Local Relations Committee. He was appointed by former Governor Rick Perry to serve on the Board of Directors for the Texas State Securities Board from 2009 to 2015.

 

Mitchell’s membership with 100 Black Men of Houston, United Way - Alexis de Tocqueville Society and National Black MBA Association, Inc., Houston Chapter and being a Board Member of Pro-Vision, Inc., and the Holocaust Museum Houston, affords him the opportunity to support positive change in the community in which he lives and in the lives of others.

 

Mitchell and his wife are the proud parents to one son. He is active in his church, Wheeler Avenue Baptist Church, and is a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.
