1.0 OVERVIEW - Check out books from the Robert James Terry Library at the Circulation Desk, located on the first floor near the entrance.
2.0 CIRCULATION PROCEDURES
2.1 Who can charge out materials?
Students, faculty and staff with current Texas Southern University identification cards. Barcodes are placed on the ID cards. An application is required to complete this process.
2.2 What materials may go out?
Books from the general collection, some overnight Reserve Materials, and Paperback Collection from Heartman Collection.
2.3. What materials do not circulate?
Journals and non-book materials such as microfilm, microfiche or any audio-visual materials from the Learning Resources Center; Newspapers; Theses and Dissertations; and Heartman Collection Materials.
2.4. How long can materials be kept when charged out?
Materials can be kept for a period of two weeks and can be renewed once. Near the end of each semester, shorter lending periods may be in effect.
2.5. About reserve materials:
These materials generally circulate within the building for a two-hour period unless otherwise stated by the instructor, they may be checked out for overnight use one hour before the library closes.
2.6. Fines for overdue books:
General collection $.25 per day per book
Reserve materials $.25 per hour or $1.00 per day per book
Lost books Cost of book plus $10.00 processing fee
3.0 GEAC ONLINE CATALOG
The library operates its own in-house computer system. Located on all floors of the library, Geac has the following modules available: Circulation, Online Public Catalog (OPC), Acquisitions and Serials Control. The Online Public Catalog (OPC) has the following features available to users:
- TITLE, journal title, series title, etc.
- AUTHOR, illustrator, editor, organization, etc.
- SUBJECT of the material.
- KEYWORD, one word taken from either title, author, or subject
- PATRON INFORMATION; your fines, loans, holds, etc.
- RESERVE MATERIALS
3.1 How to locate books in the general collection
Patrons select, from the main general collection, the books they wish to checkout. These open-stack areas are located in the third, fourth, and fifth floors of the library. Some paperback titles, from the Heartman Collection, may be checked out.

4.0 TEXSHARE CARD
4.1 Faculty, students and staff who are eligible can be issued TexShare cards. This card allows the holder, borrowing privileges at participating libraries within the state.
4.1.1 Who is eligible:
Faculty, staff and students who are in good standing with the library are eligible to receive a TexShare card as part of the Robert James Terry's participation in the state wide TexShare Resource Sharing Program. Apply at the Circulation Desk, first floor.
4.1.2 Returning borrowed materials:
Borrowers are responsible for returning materials by the due date, in person or by first-class mail, to the lending library. Cardholders are responsible for all bills, fines or charges incurred at any participating library.
4.2 4.2 Texas Southern University Circulation Policies for TexShare Library Card Holders from TexShare Libraries.
4.2.1 Identification:
University Identification Cards, along with a TexShare Card are required to borrow materials.
4.2.2 What materials circulate:
Books from the General Collection can be charged out for a two week period with one renewal.
4.2.3 Number of books which can be borrowed:
A total of four (4) books can be checked out per borrower.
4.2.4 Renewals:
Renewals must be made in person only. Only one renewal will be allowed, if there is not a hold or recall on the material.
4.2.5 Returns:
Borrowers are responsible for returning materials by the due date. Borrowers are encouraged to return materials in person. If not, items should be returned by first class insured mail. Mail to: Circulation Department, Robert James Terry Library, Texas Southern University, Houston, Texas 77004.
4.2.6 Recalls:
All items are subject to recall. If an item is recalled, the recall date replaces the original due date.
4.2.7 Non-circulating Items:
Reference materials, periodicals, special collection materials, government documents, audio visual materials, microforms, theses and dissertations.
4.2.8 Bills:
Charges for over due materials - - $1.00 per day per book
Lost books -- Price of the book + $15.00 processing fee
Outstanding fines and other charges are payable upon receipt of invoice.
