HOUSTON, TX, December 12, 2007 -- Texas Southern University has released the following statement relative to the decision by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) to place the institution on a 12 month probation for non-compliance with four standards related to financial-management, governance and administrative issues.
Texas Southern University remains a fully accredited institution while on probation. The issues raised are not specifically related to the University’s academic programming. The action taken by SACS—which is rooted in past troubles—does not negatively impact the education of our students or their ability to secure federal aid.
While we are disappointed by SACS’ decision, we look forward to this opportunity to prove our financial stability and work with SACS staff to achieve full compliance. We are seriously committed to addressing any legitimate concerns in a forthright manner. Our Board and management team will continue to operate with a commitment to integrity and transparency in all matters.
The University continues to make significant progress in addressing financial and governance concerns. The Reorganization Plan required by the Texas State Legislature directly dovetails with SACS’ concerns. We will not be deterred from our goal of moving the university forward and advancing its historic mission of creating educational opportunity and expanding young minds.
Recent improvements noted by Texas Southern University include:
- Appointment of a full Board of Regents, strengthening the policy-making body
- Appointment of a Chief Financial Officer experienced in financial turnarounds
- Submission of and operation within a balanced budget
- Submission of the University’s Annual Financial Report
- Enhancement of financial policies and procedures
