"Raising the Bar: Challenging Our Students to be Global Competitors"

CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS
Deadline for Submission September 27, 2009

In a recent press release, a U.S. Department of Education official stated that American students are “treading the waters of academic achievement while other countries’ students are swimming faster and farther.” Although foreign nations are becoming more competitive in our increasingly integrated global economy, education is still the cornerstone of America’s economic leadership.  Much of the challenge to maintain leadership will depend on U.S. colleges and universities’ ability to improve student achievement. Student achievement is inextricably linked to teaching effectiveness. The focus of this year’s conference, “Raising the Bar: Challenging Our Students to Become Global Competitors” is to explore pedagogical techniques and strategies aimed at enhancing teaching effectiveness.

The 17th Annual Southwestern Business Administration Teaching Conference (SWBATC) represents a unique opportunity for the cross-pollination of ideas by bringing together faculty, administrators, students and practitioners from the various business, science, mathematics, technology, education and social science disciplines. Both conceptual and empirical submissions related to the conference theme are encouraged. Special submissions for workshops, poster sessions and roundtable discussions dealing with effective teaching strategies capable of enhancing student achievement are invited.

ABOUT SWBATC

The Southwestern Business Administration Teaching Conference (SWBATC) is an annual conference sponsored by the Texas Southern University Jesse H. Jones School of Business. The purpose of the conference is to provide a forum for exchanging ideas, identifying emerging trends and examining relevant issues that support and enhance teaching effectiveness.

The conference takes place on the metropolitan campus of Texas Southern University, the second largest HBCU -- Historically Black Colleges and Universities – in the country. Texas Southern is situated between downtown Houston, home to more corporate offices than any other city outside New York, and the Medical Center, the world’s largest medical complex.

 WHO SHOULD ATTEND

Anyone interested in the following teaching areas should attend: Accounting, Business Communication, Business Education, Business Law, Business Ethics, Business Statistics,
Economics, Finance, Insurance, Management, Management Information Systems, Management Science, Marketing, Real Estate, or other disciplines in Business Administration. Faculty from related disciplines – Education, Psychology, Public Administration, Social Work, Sociology and Technology – can also benefit from the conference, since many of the sessions focus on pedagogy rather than academic content. The conference welcomes participation of doctoral candidates as session presenters, reviewers or attendees. All conference activities are free to graduate students.

CONFERENCE FORMAT

The conference format consists of lively, interactive sessions structured to facilitate the sharing of ideas and experiences. The conference takes place on the campus of Texas Southern University, the 2nd largest Historically Black University in the country. The program consists of concurrent special sessions, workshops and roundtable discussions.  The atmosphere is casual and informal. A limited number of formal research presentations at various stages of development are generally part of the conference. Poster sessions are new for this year.

Additionally, participants will be eligible for eight (8) hours of continuing professional education (CPE).

The objective of the Southwestern Business Administration Teaching Conference (SWBATC) is to foster a collaborative venue whereby participants can discuss the ideas presented, build upon them, and apply them in such a way as to improve their effectiveness within their respective institutions. This year’s theme, “Raising the Bar: Challenging Our Students to Become Global Competitors” blends the challenges of teaching effectiveness with the new U.S. economic imperative – lead or be left behind. The expectation is that this theme will stimulate provocative and motivating discussions among academics, practitioners and students. For this reason, only proposals keeping with the conference theme will be accepted. It is hoped that many of the sessions will be of cross-disciplinary interest. Sample areas for proposals sought include:

·         Exercises, games, case studies used to help create student success models;
·         Mentoring strategies;
·         Multicultural and diversity training;
·         New approaches to learning core content and critical thinking skills;
·         Entrepreneurial projects and classroom involvement; and
