Message from the Chair

On behalf of the Social Work faculty and staff, welcome.

Boutte-Queen, Needha M.As the ONLY accredited social work program located at a HBCU in Houston, we are uniquely positioned to focus on service provision to minority groups in the urban setting. While our goal is to prepare entry-level generalist practitioners, we do so in a manner that builds on a liberal arts foundation, while focusing on African American and other disadvantaged populations in an ever-growing city.

At TSU, we place emphasis on educating entry-level professional social workers who understand and apply knowledge about the bio-psycho-social elements of people and their environment to help people function fully within society.

Unlike many other majors, Social Work majors have made the decision to invest in a PROFESSIONAL DEGREE AT THE UNDERGRADUATE LEVEL. This means they will get more than a degree, more than knowledge. They will get the knowledge, values, skills and tools necessary to provide professional services in a variety of settings. Does this sound like you? If so, you have, indeed, made a smart choice!

In the event you are looking beyond your undergraduate education, it is important to know that when you graduate from the Social Work Program at TSU, you are well-prepared for graduate school. Alumni of our program are routinely accepted by graduate schools across the country. Our students have excelled at top schools such as the University of Chicago, Columbia University, Case Western, the University of Houston, the University of Texas – Arlington, Texas State University, etc. We are also proud to say that some alumni have completed their graduate studies and are busily working at major corporations, universities, and organizations across the country.

Attaining departmental advising and assistance with your schedule prior to completing registration will help you progress through the curriculum in a timely manner. Getting early advising can help you avoid the crowds associated with the beginning of the semester. Getting a professional degree requires time and commitment. Being enrolled in the proper social work classes at the proper time will help you progress in a timely manner. Therefore, it is strongly encouraged that you begin your social work endeavors by remaining enrolled in a social work course each year throughout your academic career at TSU.

In short, early academic advising serves as the roadmap to your final destination…GRADUATION! Remember, proper advising and sound grades will work well for YOU!
