Field Experience & Clinical Practice

Students must complete an application for the Teacher Education and Certification Program and are admitted based upon their undergraduate records, three letters of recommendation (one of which must be from the admitting department), passing scores on the Texas Academic Skills Program (TASP) test, and their overall GPA's (at least 3.0). In fulfilling the overall minimum GPA requirement (in accord with all undergraduate courses completed), students must also earn grades of "C" or better (where grades of "C-" are unacceptable) in all courses (60 semester credit hours) that constitute academic foundations as defined below:
  • English (12 semester credit hours) emphasizing skills in mechanics and composition
  • Speech (3 semester credit hours) emphasizing oral language proficiency
  • American History (6 semester credit hours)
  • Political Science (6 semester credit hours) emphasizing the study of the United States and of Texas Constitutions. (These credits must be completed in either a government or political science department or by examination). 
  • Science (8 semester credit hours) includes 4 semester credit hours each of Life Science and Physical Science. 
  • Mathematics (6 semester credit hours) taken at the college algebra level or above. 
  • Computer Literacy (3 semester credit hours) emphasizing computer related terminology, computer applications, the history and development of computing, communicating instructions to the computer, future trends, and computer related careers. 
  • Fine Arts (3 semester credit hours). 
  • Health Education (2 semester credit hours). 
  • Physical Education (2 semester credit hours) consists of activity courses. 
  • Electives (9 semester credit hours) taken from the discipline areas listed below, where no more than two courses from any one of these areas may be counted: 
    • Behavioral Sciences 
    • Economics (emphasis on the free enterprise system) 
    • Fine Arts 
    • Foreign Languages 
    • Humanities
Evaluation of transcripts already on file with the University may be obtained from the Office of the University Registrar. Transcripts not on file must be sent directly from the source to the College of Education, Office of Student Services and Teacher Certification. Admission to the Teacher Education and Certification Program is decided within the College of Education. The Associate Dean for Student Services and Teacher Certification will notify applicants of the outcome of their applications; however, approval for admission does not imply approval of any other application for other purposes (i.e., housing or financial aid). If the number of eligible applicants for the Teacher Education and Certification Program exceeds the number of positions that college facilities can accommodate, final selection will be made by a committee for admission to the College of Education. Students seeking to transfer to the University should note that the two application processes, to Texas Southern University and to the College of Education Teacher Education and Certification Program, are separate and independent. The deadlines for submission of completed applications for admission to the University may be earlier than those for admission to the Program. To ensure that their applications receive prompt consideration, students should apply well in advance of the time they wish to enroll, even though test scores and transcripts may not yet be available. Applications and all admission credentials must be received by the College of Education's Office of Student Services and Teacher Education before consideration for admission can be given. Students must be admitted to the Teacher Education Program before enrolling in any professional development courses.


College of Education Educator Preparation Program Admission Information

In addition to completing the application, applicants must submit the items listed below. Admission to the College of Education Educator Preparation Program is governed by the following criteria:

  • Completion of the Educator Preparation Program application

  • Submission of all transcripts from all colleges attended and a transcript from Texas Southern University reflecting the most recent semester enrolled prior to the date of the application

  • Completion of the core requirements of forty-four (44) hours and those courses identified in your degree plan

  • Submission of the degree plan signed by the advisor in the area for which certification is sought

    • 6 hours of English Composition (Eng. 131, 132)

    • 3 hours of English Literature (English 230)

    • 3 hours of Speech (Speech 131,135,136…)

    • 4 hours of Biology (Biol 143/L)

    • 4 hours of Physical Science (PHY 141/L…)

    • 3 hours of College Algebra (Math 133,134,235,236…)

    • 3 hours of Art (Art 370, Mus 347…) or any 3 hours of Fine Arts

    • 3 hours Geography (World Geography 132)

    • 6 hours of American History (Hist 231 & 232)

    • 6 hours of Political Science (Polsc 231 & 232)

    • 3 hours of General Psychology (Psychology 131, L)

    • 1 hour of Physical Education (any 100 level activity course)

    • 9 hours of electives

      • Chemistry

      • Mathematics

      • Theater

      • Foreign Language

      • Sociology

      • Health

      • Adolescent Psychology

    • 3 hours of Instructional Technology (EDCI 210/340)


  • A minimum overall grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 with all classes with a grade of C or above where a grade of C- is not acceptable.


  • Submission of verification that all parts of TASP/THEA have been passed with a minimum of: 250-Reading, 230-Mathematics, and 220-Writing.


Applicants for the Educator Preparation Program are not TASP/THEA exempt and are not eligible for any waivers.

Students scoring 270 or above on the TASP/THEA Reading test must have a GPA of 3.0 to be considered for admission to the Educator Preparation Program. Admission to the Educator Preparation Program is decided within the College of Education. The Director of Field Experiences will notify the applicant of the action taken on the application.


Students seeking to transfer to Texas Southern University should note that the two application processes, to Texas Southern University and to the College of Education Educator Preparation Program are separate and independent. State Board for Educator Certification Policies

Beginning May 2002-teacher preparation program applicants will be admitted to the Program under the new certification structure and will be required to pass the TExES proficiency test in their area of study and/or endorsement, and also to pass the pedagogy and professional responsibilities proficiency test (TExES PPR). Only eligible candidates may attempt TExES. A candidate is eligible when the candidate’s advisor and department head grant approval to sit for any of the state proficiency tests. The application must be completed and accompanied by current transcripts, a degree plan signed by the applicants’ advisor and THEA scores. Please forward application materials to:

College of Education Candidate Teaching Clinical Practice Approval Information

The applicant for the candidate teaching clinical practice must complete an application that includes the approval of the student’s advisors (C&I and in the content area). The application deadlines are as follows: for the Fall Candidate Teaching Clinical Practice is; the application deadline for the Spring Candidate Teaching Clinical Practice is. A current transcript must accompany the completed application. Persons seeking approval to engage in clinical practice are discouraged from enrolling in any additional courses. The applicant must have completed the 45 hours of observation in the field (completed validation form), as required by law, prior to admission to clinical practice. After approval has been given to a student seeking admission to the Candidate Teaching Clinical Practice, the candidate teacher is scheduled for an interview with the Director of Field Experiences and any member of the faculty of C & I that is able to participate. During this interview there is a discussion about the student’s demographics and the impact on the success of clinical Practice. Such an interview may raise such issues as: transportation, children, or any constraints that may negatively affect the success of the placement. Candidate teachers are provided professional development activities that are related to their optimum functioning during clinical practice. Candidate teachers are assigned to school districts through the collaboration of the Director of Field Experiences and the human resources personnel of the district to which the candidate teacher is assigned. Attention is given to the certification the candidate is seeking, the availability of cooperating teachers to supervise, the constraints that surfaced in the interview, and any other requirements that may impact the candidate’s placement. The candidate clinical practice is at least sixteen weeks. An Orientation is provided for the candidate teachers prior to their placement. In addition, professional development activities are scheduled throughout the clinical. Topics and skills relative to the candidates’ success are presented in workshops by Human resource and district personnel at no cost. It enables them to actively recruit teachers prior to their graduation.
