Jesse H. Jones School of Business Hosts the 25th Annual Southwestern Business Administration Teaching Conference

Houston, TX - October 18, 2017 – Interim Dean, John H. Williams and Chair, Mayur Desai welcome the 25th Annual Southwestern Business Administration Teaching Conference (SWBATC) to the Jesse H. Jones School of Business at Texas Southern University on October 26-27, 2017. The Conference Theme: "Informatics: Role of Information Systems Technology in Higher Education for Business Disciplines and Beyond"

What links Business, Science, Technology, Healthcare Administration, Public Affairs and Entertainment? The link is Informatics which is the study and practice of creating, storing, finding, manipulating and sharing information. The focus on the role of technology and informatics in higher education for business and other disciplines is at a critical pathway. This teaching conference will focus on the implications of information systems and technology in higher education and how we teach to develop student learning for skill sets employers seek for the various disciplines.

SWBATC will explore the application of informatics in several disciplines: Business, Science, Technology and Healthcare Administration, Public Affairs and Administration, Entertainment and Sports Management. Keynote speakers include Dr. Brad Jensen, Executive Manager, Accenture, Inc. presenting "Informatics: The Gulf Between Skills Preparation and Industry Requirements; Mr. Andrew Moore, Chief Operating Officer, IronEdge, Inc. on “The Democratization of BI: Why BI is the New Email” and “Tools, Training and Processes for the Overworked and Understaffed”; Dr. Janet L. Bailey, Emeritus Professor, University of Arkansas at Little Rock, presenting “Microsoft Analytics Technologies including Azure and Power BI / Accessing Free Technologies and Support Materials for Learning Processes”; and Sonny Childs, Business Intelligence Specialist, presenting “Working with Data to Create Visualizations” with many more speakers and presentations over the two-day conference.

Professor of MIS, Mayur Desai, and Chair of the SWBATC stated, “We are honored that so many brilliant speakers have chosen to share their wisdom on the importance of information technology to help us improve our ability to teach students utilizing technology in the classroom. JensenDr Bradley K. Jensen is the North American Data Science Center of Excellence Lead and a Principal Director at Accenture. He brings a wealth of extensive relationships, teaching, research, product marketing, sales, startup, and domestic/international executive experience. He has demonstrated capabilities in Curriculum Development, Course Design and Delivery, Research, Consulting, Manufacturing, Document Management, Publishing, Telecommunications, Aerospace, Legal, and Commercial Property Management. Dr. Jensen's proven accomplishments are in: Information Security, Software Development, Project Management, Strategic Alliances, E-Commerce, Strategic Marketing, P & L Management, Team Building and Consultative Selling.
Dr. Jensen is responsible for spearheading and leading Accenture Digital's strategic growth initiatives in Analytics in the United States and Canada. Specifically focusing on open source software for machine learning, artificial intelligence and deep learning by creating awareness of analytics capabilities. Responsible for driving Analytics sales growth activities, client satisfaction and project delivery success throughout North America. Some of Dr. Jensen’s accomplishments include:

  • Established Stage 0 sales deck and sales pipeline for Data Science Center of Excellence.
  • Brought Data Science Center of Excellence group from 22% to 100% chargeability.
  • Won a $2M+ software redevelopment of the Balanced Scorecard for a major pharmaceutical company that included the incorporation of advanced machine learning and predictive analytics.
  • Delivered keynotes at several Data Science conferences.
  • Contributing author for the Data Science Certification for ICCP.

 

MooreAndrew P Moore is Chief Operating Officer at IronEdge Group. Andrew has led strategic and operational service delivery for the firm for more than seven years, with demonstrable success. As a key member of the leadership team, Andrew has been instrumental in IronEdge being recognized with numerous awards for high growth, customer satisfaction and best places to work honors, several years in a row.
IronEdge consultants, architects and engineers follow a DevOps disciplined approach aligned with Lean Six Sigma under Andrew’s leadership. Additionally, the ITIL-aligned service desk and industry leading Key Performance Indicators are a direct result of his programmatic approach to delivering an excellent experience for clients, partners and employees. Andrew’s vision and the IronEdge Business Intelligence and Analytics capabilities lead the next phase of evolution for the firm. Andrew is Lean Six Sigma Certified and has a BS in Business Management from University of Phoenix. He is the Chair of the Greater Houston Power BI Users Group, recently named PUG of the month by the national chapter. He is the lead singer and keyboard player for the corporate house band.

 

ChildsSonny Childs is a business intelligence specialist with skills that combine technical prowess with business acumen. These skills are reinforced by a degree in Management Information Systems from Texas A&M, Microsoft SQL and Analytics certifications and plenty of experience working with business users and technicians around the world. Sonny works on and delivers data solutions and business intelligence using many major enterprise applications. His detailed work on these systems has won consulting contracts with large companies looking to augment and enhance their existing intelligence infrastructure.
Currently, Sonny is the Business Intelligence Lead for the IronEdge Group, a mid-market managed services provider in the Houston area, where he leads business intelligence consulting engagements for clients and internal processes. Sonny has spent the last two years building a secure, scalable cloud BI solution to provide IronEdge's staff and clients reliable and interactive reports focused on showing actionable insights and the value of IronEdge's services.
Sonny is passionate about working with data, as he believes the benefits and ramifications of telling the right story, at the right time, in the right way, can be monumental to the direction and business decisions of a department or company. He is particular about the accuracy of data, and thrives in situations where he can interrogate both systems and people to determine and deliver the true objective of a project.
