JHJ School of Business at Texas Southern University adds depth to its leadership team
to propel the School forward.
Houston, TX. September 7, 2012 - Dr. Ronald A. Johnson, Dean of the Jesse H. Jones School of Business at Texas Southern University recently added three new members to his leadership team. The new team members join the School’s talented pool of faculty and staff and will help strengthen the JHJ School and advance the mission to transform students into leaders who are prepared to do business in the global economy. The new team members along with the faculty, staff, students, alumni, and partners of the JHJ School share a set of universal goals. They are committed to exemplary leadership in innovation for student centered learning, engagement in the community, and achieving the mission of the JHJ School and TSU. The new members of the JHJ School leadership represent diverse experiences and disciplines, yet they all are innovative and globally focused professionals who have detailed knowledge of best practices and of benchmarking strategies in their fields: Dr. Bruce Berger has been appointed to the newly restructured position of Associate Dean for student affairs and student services in the JHJ School. He leads the School’s efforts in achieving its primary goal of providing a personalized high-quality educational environment that prepares future leaders for career success, a commitment to life-long learning, and citizenship. Through collaboration and coordination with other resources on and off campus, Berger will help develop opportunities for local, regional, national, and international engagement and outreach where students in the JHJ School can do well for themselves by doing good things for others. These opportunities include hands-on learning in the classroom, internships, practicum, cooperative education, undergraduate and graduate research, study abroad, and college-wide and discipline-specific student organizations. Known for his innovative educational program strategies, Berger has successfully developed real world experiential learning programs that link student teams with companies in India, Mexico, South Africa, and Belgium, as well as, in several cities across the U.S. Berger is an accomplished business leader who brings his experience and expertise as a serial entrepreneur, strategic business consultant, litigator, and prosecutor to the classroom. He holds a Juris Doctorate from the University of New Hampshire, an MBA from the University of Miami, and a BS in Economics from the University of Pennsylvania. Muriel Funches has been appointed to the newly created position of Executive Director of Advancement for the JHJ School. Working closely with the Dean, Funches plays a crucial role in the leadership of and in the building of an advancement program for the JHJ School. Funches will lead collaborative engagements to support the needs of the JHJ School in raising its level of academic and operational excellence through improved visibility, deepening relationships, and strengthening the commitment of various constituencies to the School, particularly alumni. She is a former senior-level manager in radio advertising, sales and marketing who has demonstrated success rebranding, launching new product platforms, and building new radio formats for Clear Channel Radio and CBS Radio. She was recently inducted into the Texas Radio Hall of Fame. Funches is also an entrepreneur in the advertising and marketing industry in Houston. Her significant sales and marketing experience will advance the JHJ School brand, corporate partnerships, community engagement, and alumni participation. Funches holds a BBA in Marketing and Economics from Howard University. Dr. Ronald Brown has been appointed to the newly created position of Executive Director of Recruitment and Retention for the JHJ School. Brown will lead the effort to design and implement systems for aligning the recruitment, retention, and placement activities and outcomes with the School’s academic programs and strategic priorities. He is responsible for developing strategic student recruitment and admission plans and leading the enrollment management team. Brown has held leadership positions in enrollment management, student success programs, and institutional research for the Lone Star College System and has worked for the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board. He has created highly successful programs to support and retain students at Lone Star including, First Time In College,Project Male, which targets African American and Hispanic students to provide mentorship and academic support; and a Veterans Affairs Center to assist transitioning service members in pursuit of college degrees. Brown holds a Ph.D. in Education Administration and Human Resource Development from Texas A&M University, a M.Ed. and a BBA in Administration Information Management from Prairie View A&M University, and a Certificate in Management and Leadership in Education from Harvard University. About the new members of the JHJ School leadership team, Dean Johnson said, “I am enthusiastic about these highly skilled professionals joining the JHJ School family. Each has amassed a wealth of knowledge and skill that further cements the JHJ School’s standing as an important source of capacity for Houston. Berger brings the experience needed to strengthen our student-centered culture and partnerships involving the economic transformation of Houston and our region; Funches will help us tell our story, revive old friendships, and build new lasting relationships in Houston and beyond; and Brown will help us attract, retain, and transform high potential students into graduates with the essential skills and tools needed to make a positive and lasting difference in their world.”
