Robert J. Terry Library

The Serials Department is located on the second floor of the Robert James Terry Library. The Serials Department Information Desk is located just inside the Current Periodicals Room.

Currently, the Robert James Terry Library receives approximately 1,800 serial publications. The holdings and locations of journal titles currently subscribed to by the library can be accessed through the online library catalog. A flip-file at the Information Desk displays the titles and locations of all serial titles maintained by the library.

While the main Serials Collection is located on the second floor of the library, additional serial collections are divided by discipline. These serial collections are housed in other locations.

Business Serials are located on the fifth floor in the Business Library. Serial subscriptions that pertain to African-American Life and Culture are held in the Heartman Collection on the first floor.

Current issues of Pharmacy Serials are located in the Pharmacy Reading Room in the College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, which is temporarily relocated in the Current Periodicals Room. However, the bound volumes of Pharmacy serials are part of the second floor Bound Journals Collection.

All of the journal titles held by the Robert James Terry Library are non-circulating.


The second floor Serials Collection is comprised of titles from the following disciplines: Education, Engineering, General Interest, General Sciences, Humanities and the Social Sciences.

Current Periodicals Room

All recently received journal titles for the year are maintained in the Current Periodicals Room. These journals are arranged alphabetically by the title of the journal.

A number of highly popular titles are kept at the Information Desk. To request an issue of any of these titles, a journal request slip must be filled out at the Information Desk with a valid student identification card presented.

Current periodicals do not circulate outside the Current Periodicals Room. Photocopy machines are available.


The Current Newspaper Collection is located at the end of the current periodical shelving units. Newspapers are arranged alphabetically by title. Most of the newspapers are kept for a three months period.

Bound Journals Collection

During the Spring Semester, each complete volume of a serial title is sent to the bindery to be bound into a hardbound volume. The Bound Journals Collection is arranged in alphabetical order by journal title. This collection is located at the west end of the second floor.

Missing Issue Collection

Incomplete volumes for serial titles not sent to the bindery are maintained in the Missing Issues Collection. Ask at the Information Desk for assistance in retrieving serial titles in this collection.


Various subject specific indexes are housed on the second floor to provide subject access to the serial collections. An index locator is available at the Serials Department Information Desk. Ask at the Information Desk for assistance in referencing these indexes.


Various electronic databases are available for library users to search and acquire information in serials. Computers are available for this purpose. TSU is a registered member of TexShare. Most of these databases can be accessed from the home page of TexShare at the web address

Microfilm/Microfiche reader printers are available to reference serial titles on microforms.

The Reading Edge - A Kurzweil Reader
The unique bookedge scanner allows books to be scanned without damaging binding or distorting text. It is designed to enable blind and visually impaired users to begin reading immediately.

Closed Circuit Television System (CCTV System)
The system is designed to enlarge image for visually impaired users. Patrons can select viewing either positive (black on white) or reverse polarity (white on black).
