Improving Urban Traffic and Air Quality by New Driving Simulator

The Department of Transportation Studies in the College of Science and Technology at Texas Southern University (TSU) selected DriveSafety’s DS-600c with QMotion (tm) as a research tool to help improve urban traffic and air quality issues.

“On a daily basis, we see the problems caused by excessive congestion on our roadways,” said Dr. Lei Yu, Chair of Transportation Studies. “TSU is providing valuable research in improving urban traffic flow and the pollution associated with urban transportation.”

“DriveSafety is pleased it can work with Texas Southern University in providing them an effective research tool to help them address urban transportation problems,” said Bill Woahn, President and CEO of DriveSafety.

The Innovative Transportation Research Institute (ITRI) at Texas Southern University conducts advanced researches on seeking optimal solutions to various urban traffic and air quality problems. The research focus of UTAQL include: traffic operation, ITS, freight impacts, law enforcement, transportation, safety and air quality. In the future, ITRI has plans to do transportation safety research on the applications of new and emerging technologies including:

1) Vehicle infrastructure integration (VII) based road-condition warning system for highway collision prevention.
2) Enhance microscopic traffic simulation models for traffic safety assessment.
3) Evaluate the safety impacts of advanced work zone control technologies.

The 81st Annual Transportation Research Board (TRB) Conference

More than 8,000 people attended the 81st Annual Transportation Research Board (TRB) Conference at the Marriot Hotel in  Washington, D.C., from January 13 - 17, 2002. Sixteen Texas Southern University students and faculty attended the conference. Many TSU participants expressed a high degree of satisfaction with the quality of the speakers and importance of the material covered.

Most notably, Dr. Naomi W. Lede was named the first recipient of the Sharon D. Banks Award for Innovative Leadership in Transportation. Dr. Lede established the Transportation Graduate Program at TSU and has written several books and mentored multiple students during her 25-year career at the university.

Students attending the conference learned about the latest development concerning increased safety and security measures following the terrorist attacks against the United States on September 11, 2001. All conference participants received briefing materials and a CD on all of the briefings that were presented for future reference. Many of the graduate students indicated that the CD would be useful for literature reviews for their thesis.

Additionally, the TRB conference included a special section for employment and internship opportunities for new graduates in the transportation field. This avenue afforded students the opportunity to gain additional experience to supplement their academic backgrounds.

Finally, four TSU students participated in the Dwight D. Eisenhower conference held at the hotel on January 15th. That conference included presentations on the research that current students were performing and awards and recognition of DOT officials and members of academia.
