Career Planning and Placement Center Services

Placement
The major objective of the Placement component is to provide support services that will enhance the students' abilities to make self-evaluations, determine career directions, acquire job-seeking skills, communicate with employers, prepare for employment and graduate school interviews and to ultimately identify and secure satisfying job placement. Students are assisted in establishing and redefining educational and occupational goals. Students and alumni of all disciplines and classifications are encouraged to utilize our services. Students must complete a registration packet to eligible for on-campus interviews. Students are encouraged to register with the Placement Center early in their TSU careers and not wait until they become graduating seniors.

Cooperative Educational Program
The Co-op program is an academic learning strategy designed to integrate theoretical classroom learning with practical on-the-job application. The major objective of this component is to provide a continuous mixture of theory and practice, bridge the gap between industry and education and provide a smooth transition from the educational arena into the real world of work.

To be eligible for placement into co-op positions (paid career-related work experiences), students must have completed a minimum of thirty(30) semester hours of credit, maintain a minimum of 2.0 cumulative grade point average (based on a 4.0 scale), and be in good standing with the University. The Co-op program is open to all disciplines within the University.

Job Location and Development (JLD)
The JLD program is designed to assist students in locating employment opportunities to assist in financing their education. The employment opportunities may be full-time, part-time, temporary, summer/seasonal and off-campus work-study positions for non-profit organizations. The work experiences are paid experiences, but may or may not be career-related. All TSU students are eligible to participate.

Internships
The Intern program is designed to assist students in locating opportunities (paid/unpaid) relevant to their academic concentration (major-minor). The objective of this program is to place students in a professional work environment where they will apply elements of their academic training to the business world through observation and assigned tasks.

Internships are available to all Texas Southern students (freshmen, sophomores, juniors, seniors and graduate students). the internships may be during a particular semester or only in the summer. They are generally a one-time work opportunity and may or may not require a minimum grade point average.

This programs is especially designed to assist individuals with undecided majors and those who are seeking to chart new career directions. The program allows students to identify interests and skills and determine how those characteristics can be used to choose a major and /or career.

Services for Students

Career counseling assists students in career decision-making through counseling, interest inventories, job market information, planning job search approaches, dealing with special problems (such as dual careers or personal needs), group workshops and career planning sessions.

On-campus interviews provide an opportunity for personal contact with employers in order to discover whether there is a sufficient match between the employer's needs and your qualifications and interest to justify further in-depth discussions.

Job Listing Notebooks, located in the Placement Services Center, contain current full-time job openings from employers, and provide information for direct contact with employers for specific positions.

Current market information includes data on current needs, salaries and resources for contacting employers not interviewing on campus.

Employer literature is furnished by the employers to provide information on their organizations and employment opportunities. The information is available in the Career Information Center.

Special Orientation Workshops are held each semester to acquaint students with using the Placement Services Center. Workshops on interviewing, resume preparation and employer selection are among those offered. For more information visit the Placement Services Center office.
