Student Success Stories

Holli TaylorHolli Taylor, a senior Interdisciplinary Studies major from Chattanooga, TN, found out about the Maroon & Gray Scholarship through her Honors College advisor.
Taylor applied because she needed financial assistance and was “relieved to know the scholarship was awarded to me.” “The Maroon & Gray scholarship is important for Texas Southern students because it reiterates the fact that our alumni care for the current students,” said Taylor “The reinforcement of the Texas Southern family is being clearly demonstrated.”

“Returning to TSU this fall semester many things changed in my life regarding school within a week,” said Camille Mills, a graduate student from Hawthorne, California studying sports study and sports leadership. Mills found out about the scholarship while attending the second annual Maroon & Gray Gala last April. “When I was informed about being a recipient, I felt a big weight lifted off of my shoulders,” said Mills, “I was so happy.” The scholarship is something Mills said affected her academic life by allowing her to continue her education at the University. It helped her personal life in a financial way as well. “A scholarship can make a difference in one’s life to further their education.”

Tamerras Leonard
Senior Broadcast Journalism major Tamerras Leonard found out about the Maroon & Gray Scholarship through fellow recipient and Student Government Association President Aaron Dallas. “Ultimately, cost of attendance has increased,” said Leonard, “Scholarships like Maroon & Gray allow scholars to attain the finances needed to pursue their education.” Leonard applied for the scholarship to assist in paying for his tuition and said he felt relieved and grateful when he was informed he was a recipient. “Being a recipient of this scholarship ultimately granted me the opportunity to continue my pursuit of an education.”

Majetoluwa Sikuade, a senior Radio, Television & Film major from Lagos, Nigeria said receiving the Maroon & Gray scholarship removed a great deal of stress on himself and his family, “It allowed me to focus on my school curriculum as well as extracurricular productions.” Sikuade learned of the scholarship through his professors and applied because he understood how Tigers help each other out. “It’s necessary for current students to know that they aren’t in this alone,” said Sikuade, “The scholarship is proof that as TSU Tigers, we take care of our collegiate family.”

“The Maroon & Gray Scholarship is important to TSU because it allows students to stay motivated and dedicated as they near their completion date of what they set forth to do,” said Arintha Mitchell, a senior Respiratory Therapy major from Houston. She said that by being awarded the scholarship, her financial burden was lightened, which allowed her to focus more on the important aspect of school, learning. “Your generosity has inspired me to help others and give back to the community,” said Mitchell. She hopes to one day be able to help students achieve their goals just as she was assisted. “I plan to seek employment to give back to the community with hopes to inspire other students to achieve an education at Texas Southern University.”
