Texas Southern University’s acclaimed Debate Team returned to campus after competing in the 27^th annual International Forensics Tournament in Lima, Peru. The team finished in second place after several days of overall competition.

TSU garnered three first-place finishes in poetry, prose, and duo-dramatic interpretation; second-place in programmed oral interpretation; third-place in rhetorical criticism; and a semi-finalist award in impromptu speaking. The team brought home awards in parliamentary debate and other individual events. TSU won a total of 22 awards in eight out of twelve categories, including an award for the Nuance event.

“This was another exceptional international performance by the proud Texas Southern University Debate Team,” said TSU President Austin Lane. “I am extremely proud of the way they represented themselves and the University. Their continued success is a testament to the team’s leadership and the hard work and dedication given by each member of the team.” 

TSU and its coaches were commended at the closing session for their participation in 24 of the tournament’s 27-year history.

TSU team members are Wesley Harris, Rebecca Edwards, Shelton Brown, Jessica Johnson, Jay Wilson, Onyeka Onyekwelu, Chantule Bacchus, Darryl Gardner, Prince Ibe, Miguel Gavin, Abigail Bartlett, Antre’chelle Dorsey, Deyonze Thompson, and Daisha Nash.
