Scholarship fund receives major donation from Rockets star

Posted on Thursday, September 07, 2017

Houston Rockets guard James Harden donated $100,000 to Texas Southern University on August 20. The gift is designated for scholarships to aid students in financial need. The basketball star’s 3 The Harden Way Foundation is planning to launch the James Harden Leadership Academy at TSU.

"That's amazing, given the population of students we serve who come from what I consider to be one of the lowest socioeconomic backgrounds in the city," TSU president Dr. Austin Lane said. "To have that kind of opportunity from someone like James Harden, who can help further the educational careers of those students and help their dreams come true, it’s just phenomenal to have that kind of support from a local icon like him."

Dr. Lane said that the scholarship fund will help bridge the gap for students who otherwise couldn't afford to go to school.

"Just to have someone like him reach out and have it directed to that population of students, it's just a match made in heaven for our kids. I love that the focus is not on basketball, but is on education. He's using his basketball talent to help further the education of our students with an education-leadership component," Dr. Lane said.
