TSU celebrating 90 years of education and service with a 12-month slate of events

Posted on Friday, September 15, 2017

Texas Southern University (TSU) will begin a yearlong celebration to commemorate the 90th anniversary of its founding on Thursday, September 14, 2017. The University was established out of necessity on September 14, 1927 to offset the restrictions of segregation. TSU has evolved through the years by fostering academic and social progress on its way to becoming a premier urban-serving institution. Texas Southern is planning to honor this rich legacy and history by connecting with its alumni and community partners through a dedicated campaign of outreach and service.

“This is a milestone year in the legacy of this great institution,” said TSU President Austin Lane.  “It is important that we take time to reflect and pay tribute to our pioneers as we move forward and strive to achieve our goals. We are today’s TSU because of those who laid the foundation before us.”

The campaign launched September 14, when the landmark Bell Tower in the center of campus will toll the school’s alma mater. The 365-day campaign will focus on several key areas including solidifying our roots as an urban-serving institution through neighborhood community service projects, connecting current students with distinguished alumni through panel discussions and a speakers’ series, and increasing alumni involvement through several fundraising appeals.

“Countless lives have been touched and careers have been launched from the lessons Texas Southern University has taught and opportunities that it has given,” said Melinda Spaulding, vice president of University Advancement. “This campaign will be an opportunity for us to show the greatness of TSU to the world.”
