TSU dean, police chief honored as city's 'most influential' of 2017 by Houston Woman magazine

Texas Southern University (TSU) is proud to announce that Dr. Lillian B. Poats, dean of the College of Education, and Mary Young, executive director and chief of police for the Department of Public Safety, have been named as two of “Houston’s 50 Most Influential Women of 2017” by Houston Woman magazine.

Dr. Poats and Chief Young were feted, along with the other 48 honorees and 300 guests, at an afternoon tea held on February 11 at the Junior League of Houston. The annual event was co-hosted by the magazine and Chevron. Each of the honorees was nominated for inclusion by a magazine subscriber and selected by magazine staff.

“The Texas Southern family is elated to have Chief Young and Dr. Poats celebrated for their contribution to our institution and the city at large,” said TSU President Austin A. Lane. “Both embody the intelligence, savvy and strength that is the hallmark of our TSU community.”

Beverly Denver, publisher of Houston Woman, said, “Those selected as Houston’s 50 Most Influential Women of 2017 are individuals with vast networks of social and professional connections. They have earned an enviable reputation for their expertise in a particular field or arena. They are knowledgeable, credible, and worthy of trust and admiration.”

Other 2017 nominees include Eloise Dunn Brice – University of Houston, Jenny C. Chang, M.D. – Houston Methodist Cancer Center, Melissa Gonzalez – Houston Community College-Southeast, Graces Olivares – Univision, sculptor Michelle O’Michael, State Rep. Mary Ann Perez, Carrie Glassman Shoemake – architect at GSMA, author ReShonda Tate Billingsley, Gina Gaston Elie – anchor, KTRK-Channel 13, and Robin H. Fielder, Anadarko Petroleum.

Since 2008, Houston Woman Magazine has published an annual keepsake edition featuring 50 Most Influential Women of the Year. Copies featuring the magazine’s 2016 honorees were mailed to all subscribers.
