Texas Southern Alumni Stay Connected During COVID-19

Posted on Thursday, July 16, 2020

Texas Southern University alumni have remained connected to their alma mater during COVID-19.

“During these unprecedented times, alumni have been accessible via virtual platforms and consistently support the University’s efforts. We are able to engage more alumni all over the country and plan to stay connected during the pandemic and beyond,” stated Connie L. Cochran, Assistant Vice-President of Alumni Relations & Special Events.

Alumni have participated in virtual recruitment fairs, events, gatherings, chapter meetings, webinars and more hosted by the Office of Alumni Relations to stay informed and connected to the University. In April, Tigers connected on Facebook Live with a virtual Day Party. KTSU Radio with DJ Paul “PD” Davis provided the sounds as alumni networked, sang, danced and reminisced with fellow alumni.

Other events consisted of a University update with TSU Board Chairman Albert Myers and TSU Interim President Kenneth Huewitt, who answered questions submitted by alumni. In May and mid-June, other virtual gatherings were held for the Tiger family. KTSU DJ’s Chilly “Bill” Smith and Herman “Boom Boom” Williams entertained alumni. These events included thanking those alumni who gave to the COVID-19 fund to help students impacted by the pandemic, alumni trivia, and a contest for the best dressed in TSU alumni paraphernalia.

A week following the virtual gathering, a New Student Information Session was held for alumni to better understand the changes in the admissions process during COVID-19 for prospective students. Dr. Brian Armstrong, Executive Director for Outreach provided information for alumni.

“Without alumni support across the nation, our outreach efforts would not be successful. We are grateful for our supportive alumni,” Dr. Armstrong said.

Most recently, a Virtual Police Reform Session was held for alumni, to hear first-hand from police reform expert Dr. Howard Henderson, Director of the TSU Center for Justice Research, on how they can become more involved in the process. TSU Alumni have remained active despite the pandemic shifting everyone's lifestyles, and the alumni have continued to participate within the Tiger Community, even if it is from afar.
