Johnathon Thomas drafted by Washington Nationals

TSU outfielder Johnathon Thomas was selected by the Washington Nationals in the 2022 MLB Draft. Thomas, known on the field as "Tuda," led the nation this season with 62 stolen bases.

Texas Southern outfielder Johnathon Thomas became the second consecutive Tiger drafted as the Washington Nationals selected him on Tuesday in the 2022 Major League Baseball Draft.

Thomas, known as "Tuda" on the field, transferred to TSU prior to the fall semester and made an immediate impact, batting .345 and leading the nation with 62 stolen bases. The Fresno, Texas native also had 69 hits, 68 runs 16 doubles, five triples, nine home runs and 42 RBI.

This marked the first time since 2005-07 that TSU baseball has had back-to-back student-athletes drafted. Thomas is also the highest player drafted at TSU since Prince Cousinard (7th round) in 1983. Last year, TSU pitcher Kam Fields was selected by the Tampa Bay Rays and is currently in Class A Ball.
