A thesis is the unifying force of any paper. It anchors your reader as they explore the complex analsysi of an idea that you are presenting. Like your overall paper, a good thesis is not dashed off in a moment, but must be developed, questioned, and revised as new evidence comes to light.
In its most mature form, a thesis will be a conceptually complex sentence that posits a theory that is not immediately obvious to your readers. As such, it is not a statement of fact, but an arguable idea that challenges your reader to explore your interpretation of evidence.
