TSU Alumni: A Good Roux for a Great
Gumbo by Dr. Cherry Gooden
Dr. Cherry Gooden metaphorically describes TSU alumni as
the ROUX that makes the gumbo that is Texas Southern University. With gumbo being only as
delicious as the ROUX it is prepared with, what kind of ROUX are you?
Recipe for ROUX/alumni:
R - Recognize and Respect - What has been added to your life because of TSU. TSU
increased our value and opened doors of opportunity.
O - Opportunities to support TSU.
U - You make it happen. You are the achievers & the examples. Speak positively about TSU.
X - Extra mile. Go the extra miles, give extra money, extra effort, prayer and time.
Dr. Gooden also created a model for alumni participation as a guide for how we as alumni can be of
better service to the University. This five level guide includes: financial support, volunteering,
participations in programs and initiatives, and involvement in the alumni association.
