Directors and Staff
This skilled trumpeter's performance credits include work with many ensembles and cover a wide range of musical styles. The Prince George Philharmonic Orchestra, John F. Kennedy Opera House Orchestra, and Sonny Franklin Big Band are among the many ensembles to benefit from Lee's musical expertise. In addition, Richard Lee has performed with notable entertainers such as Redd Foxx and the O'Jays. Lee's teaching credits are no less impressive. He began his university teaching experience at Shaw University in North Carolina, followed by a 15 year tenure at Howard University, where he held his first "Director of Bands" position. He then returned home to Houston (and to his alma mater as well), to take the helm of the "Ocean of Soul" at Texas Southern University; where he continues to teach and conduct marching band, wind ensemble, and trumpet ensembles.
"Mr. D" is one of the assistant band directors at Texas Southern University. The Washington, D.C. Native is responsible for field show design, and is the "production manager" for the internationally famous "Ocean of Soul".
Clarence Gibson is a native of Chicago, Illinois. He received his Bachelor’s degree from Alcorn State University in music education. Mr. Gibson was selected as a Presser Music Scholar at Alcorn State University for his accomplishments as a musician as well as an academician. Mr. Gibson completed his Master’s degree at the University of Southern Mississippi in Music Education. Mr. Gibson's expertise on Tuba has led him to perform with many ensembles professionally including the Scott-Joplin Orchestra and the Natchez Adams County Community Concert Band to name a few. Mr. Gibson arranges for local high school as well as high school and university bands around the country. He adjudicates concert and marching festival competitions and gives lectures and master classes on low brass instruments. Mr. Gibson teaching career is no less impressive. His teaching career began in Natchez, Mississippi. Mr. Gibson served as a Band Director for the Natchez-Adams School District. His duties included teaching band from grades 5-12th. He primary duties on the high school level included charting drill, arranging and conducting the 180 member “Pride of Natchez” Marching Band. He also was director of award winning Natchez High School Concert Band, Pep band and the Jazz Ensemble. Mr. Gibson also arranged and conducted the Alcorn State University Marching Band for 3 years. Mr. Gibson also served in the Wilkinson County School District in Woodville, MS as director of bands before coming to Texas Southern University. Mr. Gibson arranges and conducts the “Ocean of Soul Marching Band“, concert band, pep bands and brass ensembles at Texas Southern University. He also teaches applied lower brass. Edwin L. Rose, Assistant Director of Bands Mr. Edwin Rose is a native of Houston, Texas. He received his Bachelor of Arts Degree from Texas Southern University in Tele-Communications with an emphasis in Television Production. After graduation Mr. Rose served as Assistant Programming Coordinator at KTBU Channel 55 the Tube and worked in the Engineering Department at KTXH Channel 20 in Houston. During the Fall of 2001 Mr. Rose began his career as a Teacher Technologist for the Houston Independent School District. Mr. Rose has a Master’s in Business Administration from American InterContinental University located in Houston, where he also served in the Admissions Department and was a member of the Admissions & Marketing Committee.
Mr. Rose is the owner of B. B. Production Studios. He has experience in various forms of Video Editing and Production work. He has edited several commercials that have aired in several markets across the country. He has produced promotional videos for both Texas Southern University and Prairie View A & M University Marching Bands. He is currently pursuing a Doctorate of Education in Media studies specializing in Media Psychology at Fielding Graduate University. Mr. Rose serves as Special Events Coordinator, Media Management Coordinator and Travel Coordinator for University Bands.
