The Office of Communications engages in a number of strategies to place stories in the media and increase the university’s visibility.  Here’s a sampling of recent news coverage:

 


1.  Chicago Tribune (3/16/07)

Praise of Golden Apple is music to teacher's ears

Brandon Evans, an 18-year-old senior was one of two people to nominate David Eanes for the Golden Apple Award in this feature story highlighting Eanes’ accomplishments.   Evans said Eanes taught him that it's OK to make mistakes, that life affords “us a chance to correct them.”  It's a lesson he'll take with him this fall when he starts at Texas Southern University in Houston.

Third Ward resident aims to make difference in his hometown

This article features alumnus Gerald Womack and his rise to success in the real estate industry. After completing three years in Texas Southern University's business school, Womack said he decided he should be out selling real estate full-time.  He also acquired his broker's license and launched a partnership, Womack & Harrell Estate, in 1979.

Brooks to retire as CEO of Houston Area Urban League

TSU alumna Sylvia Brooks is quoted in a story about her retirement as CEO of the Houston Area Urban League.  "When I started, we were a small employment services and housing program," Brooks said. "I wanted to create a strong board, staff and volunteer corps.

Special TSU collection helps trace African history

As director of the Special Collections at Texas Southern University's Robert J. Terry Library, Bernard Forrester said the library has just the right material for researchers, historians and students to trace the history of African people.

Alabama grows more than veggies: It grows spirit

On an acre-lot at 2818 Alabama owned by Texas Southern University, the Alabama Community Garden is the oldest and largest raised bed community garden in Southeast Texas — and one of 126 affiliated with Urban Harvest, according to Urban Harvest executive director Bob Randall.

TSU breaks out of slump at SWAC tourney

With leading scorer and rebounder Chris Moore watching from behind the bench — crutches by his side — the TSU Tigers played like a team with something to prove and got 20-point performances from Jacques Jones and Sollie Norwood in a 74-64 victory over Alcorn State on March 8 before 576 at BJCC Arena.

TSU graduate wants to help others:  Taylor founds nonprofit as way to help women

At 45, Vanessa Taylor, grandmother of six recently graduated with honors from Texas Southern University with a degree in psychology.  She also created a nonprofit organization that encourages other women "to be the best they can be." The mission of the nonprofit, Women Overcoming Major Bondages, is to help women who are considered castaways to reveal, deal and heal through the word of God, Taylor said.
