In Houston, the two most-listened to Public Radio music formats tend to be Jazz and Classical

Listeners who prefer either of the two formats increased more than 10% during the past eight years, according to the Corporation for Public Broadcasting survey. More than 10 million adults (22-55+) living in the nations large urban communities show the steady growth of the two formats. However, the demographics of the Jazz listener is more prominent.

  • It is estimated that 57.7% of the people between the ages 22-55 listen to Jazz or Classical music on their radio.
  • Approximately 36.1% of the adults who listen to Jazz or Classical are between the ages of 35 and 49. Nearly 64% of those adults have either attended or have graduated from college.
  • More than 40% have yearly income of $35,000 or more.
  • More than 39% have professional or management occupations. A significant number are entrepreneurs of a first generation.

KTSU listeners are very special people

  • They are more likely to spend $100.00 or more a month on books, periodicals and collectibles.
  • They are more than twice as likely to own stock, mutual funds, and other securities.
  • Jazz listeners are more likely to buy stereo equipment, films and tapes in quantity.
  • They are more likely to travel, take business trips, use a travel agent, stay in a hotel or won an imported automobile or multi-use vehicle.

  • Based in the nation's fourth-largest metroplex.
  • Affiliated with the largest predominantly black institution of higher learning in Texas.
  • Texas Southern University generates more than $100 million into the local community.

Information and statistics

According to the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, KTSU has the largest African-American audience of any public radio station in the United States, with a cumulative audience of 252,400 listeners, 43% men, 57% women, an average listening time of 10 hours and 55 minutes per week.
