In 1965, Congress established a series of programs to help disadvantaged students complete high school, enter college, graduate, and move on to participate more fully in America’s social and economic life. These programs, funded under Title IV of the Higher Education Act, are known as the “TRIO Programs.” TRO programs are designed to help students overcome class, social and cultural barriers to higher education. Since 1972, Texas Southern University’s Student Support Services Program (SSSP) has provided academic tutorials and seminars that enabled thousands of students to successfully matriculate and attain a baccalaureate degree. This website provides an overview of the numerous services offered by SSS and identifies federally mandated eligibility criteria for program participation.
