Mission of the Tavis Smiley School of Communication

The primary mission of the Tavis Smiley School of Communication (TSSOC) is to prepare students majoring and minoring in departmental curricula for entry into the workforce and for graduate study. A secondary mission is to ensure that all students matriculating through the university have an understanding of the impact of communication skills upon all aspects of society. This begins with enrollment in SC 135 which is a part of the general education core of the university. The program focuses on five main competency skills: (1) Speaking, Writing, and Critical Thinking. (2) Overall Communication Systems; (3) Technological Tools; (4) Research and Analysis (5) Theory, Performance and Production.

Martin Luther King Center is a three-story building that houses the Tavis Smiley School of Communication, a television studio, numerous computer labs, and a 300-seat auditorium.
