On behalf of the Faculty and Staff in the Biology Department, I extend sincere and warm greetings to all our visitors. Programs offered in our department are designed to ensure an overall professional development for our graduates. Our students are our most valuable resources and they will propel us further into the future. Their thoughts, efforts and dreams will carry us to places we can only imagine today and beyond. The Department of Biology's slogan "Our Students Are More Precious than Jewels" expresses our belief in them as leaders of tomorrow.
One goal of our faculty is to assist students in developing a clear direction for professional development. Direction determines destination and in the biology department we encourage students to ask themselves questions that help define a POSITIVE SELF DIRECTION. Self-direction means that "I know who I am and I know where I want to go. I'm acquiring knowledge, experiences, feelings and philosophies that will help prepare me for opportunities that will show up in the future without notice or any help on my part". Once you know where you want to go you naturally begin to work on improving your health, attitude, management skills and appearance. Soon you will see yourself in the place you want to be, going in the direction you want to go.
The Biology team is eager to educate, engage, employ, inspire, and support our students to prepare for success in Science, Technology, Mathematics and Engineering (STEM) fields in a Global arena. We encourage students to attend classes regularly and take full advantage of our newly established "Learning Resource Center" located in Room 200 off the New Science Center. Tutors are available at the Learning Resource Center all day Monday through Friday. Faculty advisors are available during their posted office hours and at other times by appointment. We want to maintain regular two way communication with students from the departmental office, so look for emails from biology@tsu.edu and respond with your comments, news, joys and concerns. The Biology Monthly Newsletter and other important information such as internships, scholarship programs, deadlines and announcements are forwarded to you by e-mail.
There is no nobler purpose than striving to reach your goal in life. Isaac Newton once said: "If I have seen further than others, it is because I have stood on the shoulders of giants." Your parents and your teachers, TSU alumni like Barbara Jordan, Mickey Leland to mention a few, along with the millions of people who have lived and learned before you have provided the shoulders. Additionally, like Dr. Martin Luther King, you have the opportunity and the responsibility to see further, to learn more, to make a better world. As you continue to build on a strong foundation, I believe you will leave posterity an academic culture that we can all be proud of. You will have access to technology we can only imagine today, but the greatest technology is within you. Your mind and your heart are greater than any tool. The future is an awesome place and it is an honor to help prepare you for it.
Sincerely,
Olufisayo. A. Jejelowo, Ph. D.
