TSU TIGERS MAKE IT THREE STRAIGHT WITH WIN OVER CONCORDIA Saturday, September 27, 2008 The Texas Southern team put together outstanding plays on both sides of the ball. A forced fumble by Matthew Valmore (6-3, 260, Sr., Houston) set up the Tiger’s first score. Place kicker Robert Hersh (5-10, 210, Fr., Pearland, Texas) connected on a 28-yard field goal to give TSU a three point lead with 8:12 remaining in the first period. That field goal was followed by a six yard touchdown run by quarterback Bobby Reid (6-3, 230, Sr., Houston). After the extra point kick, TSU led 10-0 at the 4:21 mark in the first period. Twenty seconds later, Concordia connected on a 74 yard touchdown bomb and followed up with a two point conversion before ending the first period with TSU ahead 10-8. The Tiger defense set up another score to start the second quarter when defensive back Carl Chism (6-0, 195, Jr., Washington, D.C.) forced a fumble after a TSU punt. Reid rushed for his second touchdown of the game to give the Tigers at 17-8 lead just 13:46 before halftime. Just twenty-five seconds later, Concordia went deep again and got six points off a 49 yard touchdown pass to get within three of the Tigers (17-14). Texas Southern then converted another turnover into points when defensive tackle David Knighten (6-0, 290, Sr., Bradenton, Fla.) recovered a fumble on Concordia’s 38 yard line. Six plays later, Reid hit William Osbourne (5-8, 162, Jr., Marshall, Texas) on a 20 yard pass for six points with 8:30 left to play in the second quarter. TSU went up 25-14 after Reid hooked up with tight end Roland Robins (6-3, 250, Sr., Houston) for the two point conversion. Concordia came back to put seven points on the board to end the first half, trailing 21-25. TSU’s offense started the third quarter on fire, scoring on its first three possessions. Reid started the scoring frenzy when he ran 18 yards for his third rushing touchdown of the game. Next, running back Marcus Wright (5-10, 210, Fr., Dayton, Ohio) tore up the field with an 80 yard touchdown run from scrimmage at the 10:09 mark in the third period. The last score in the quarter came with 3:22 remaining in the third when Reid completed a 28 yard pass to tight end Jonathan Hannah (6-5, 255, Jr., Hope Mills, N.C.). TSU ended the third quarter up 45-21. Although it was too little, too late, Concordia got the only score in the fourth quarter. Texas Southern extended its winning streak to three with the 45-27 victory. TSU heads to San Marcus, Texas on Saturday, Oct. 4 to face Texas State University. Kick off is slated for 6:00 pm. *Pictures by Anthony Odums |
