C-BER Scholars Program

The NASA C-BER is a collaborative project between Texas Soutehrn University (Lead), University of Houston, Norfolk State University, Jackson State University, University of California Santa Cruz, Stanford University and Texas A & M University. The C-BER is supported with capital funds from NASA’s Office of Higher Education. This Collaborative provides undergraduate, graduate, and postdoctoral research training for selected students who are seriously pursuing a career in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering and/or Mathematics.  The NASA C-BER scholars program will expose undergraduate participants to current research and careers in the STEM fields throughout the year. The program includes a provision for students to attend a national meeting.  Students selected to this Program will receive a stipend.

Eligibility Requirements:

  1. Be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident;
  2. Be a sophomore or junior currently enrolled in Texas Southern University;
  3. Be in good academic standing, making satisfactory progress towards graduation;
  4. Commit to participate full time in the Program’s 10-week summer research and subsequent events offered during the following school year (attend a scientific meeting, give presentations and attend designated seminars).

Hardcopy of all application materials must be typed or printed in black ink suitable for reproduction.

  The application consists of:

  1. Completed application form
  2. Current Transcript
  3. Student’s Personal Statement
  4. 2 letters of Recommendation from a faculty member or employer

The Student’s Personal Statement should be a one page essay, typed with 12pt font size, and with margins of at least 0.5 inches.  This Statement should address the student’s research and career interests and goals.  Also it includes what the student perceives as her/his strongest qualities, experiences, and education for succeeding in this Program.  Finally, this must include a statement of the student’s commitment to complete the Program and pursue a career in the STEM fields. 

It is the applicant’s responsibility to ensure that Mrs. Butler receives all parts of the application before the application deadline. 

Application Deadlines:  Monday, December 1, 2008; April 1, 2009; August 1, 2009.

Applications will be reviewed by a panel of  NASA C-BER researchers and  NASA Technical committee members.  Finalists will be invited to an interview held on TSU campus.
