Dr. Walter J. McCoy is the Resident Founding Dean of the Texas Southern University School of Public Affairs. Dr. McCoy has held numerous positions of distinction and honor at the University and is currently serving as the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs at the new Barbara Jordan-Mickey Leland School of Public Affairs. At its inception the School of Public Affairs offered graduate and undergraduate degrees in Public Administration, City Planning, Administration of Justice, Health Administration, Public Service, Housing Management, and Political Science.
During his tenure as Dean of the School, Dr. McCoy has served as a graduate and undergraduate professor in many of the schools academic areas. As Founding Dean, Dr. McCoy established the Ralph Bunche Chair in the School of Public Affairs which was the first in the history of Texas Southern University with grant funding from the Ford Foundation. He also created a complimentary journal to the Ralph Bunche Chair and was its original editor.
Leading scholars that provided articles for submission were 1978 Nobel Laureate Herbert A. Simon, Public Administration Review Editor in Chief and Albert Schweitzer Professor in the Humanities at Syracuse University Dwight Waldo, and Chairman of the U.S. Civil Service Commission Alan K. Campbell to name a few.
