These Tigers were playing like there was something to prove. Hanging with the SWAC's regular season champion throughout this regular season finale in Baton Rouge, Texas Southern gave Southern University all it could handle.

But Southern wrapped up its SWAC championship with a decisive run to put a cap on the regular season, beating Texas Southern 61-53 Saturday. Now the Tigers head into the SWAC Tournament next week as the fifth seed when they open up postseason play in Shreveport, La.

TSU (12-17, 9-9 SWAC) opened the second half playing with a sense of urgency, getting out and running in transition. Despite a depleted lineup, the Tigers had outscored Southern 10-2 in transition through the first 28 minutes of the game while out rebounding the Jaguars (20-8, 14-4) a good ways into the second half before Southern started to control the glass. Trailing 33-26 coming into the half, the Tigers opened up the second half with an 11-6 surge to draw within a pair, 39-37.

TSU hit eight of its first nine free throws before going one of its next nine over a 12-minute stretch in the second half. The Tigers finished 14 of 23 from the line, going 9 of 17 in the second half.

Tigers senior guard Trikeyia East's bucket with 8:18 to play pulled the Tigers within, 44-43 before Hannah Kador coaxed a triple to fall to pad the Jaguars lead back to four on the way to a 10-1 Southern run that extended the Lady Jags lead back to 10 with four minutes remaining.

Texas Southern forced four ties in the first half, and led by as many as five. In a half that saw five lead changes, Southern went into the break up seven. TSU's Jasmine Cannon, a sophomore from Dallas who has emerged even more since taking over the point guard spot a few weeks ago, had 10 points, knocking down all three of her free throws, and had three of TSU's eight assists in just 13 minutes of playing time in the opening half. The Lady Tigers shot 50 percent from the field in the first 20 minutes.

The Tigers were running well in transition, despite using just one substitution throughout -- a formality they've been used to the past couple weeks. TSU outscored Southern 10-6 in fastbreak points.

Cannon led TSU with 16 points and six assists. East finished with 11 points, eight boards and three steals. Inisha Daughtry fell a rebound shy of a double-double, finishing with 10 points and nine boards. Gabi Rosiji had 10 points and six rebounds. Kador led Southern with 15 points, and Jamie Floyd had 14 on 7 for 12 shooting.

The Lady Tigers shot 19 of 42 from the floor for 45.2 percent. Southern was 24 of 72 for 33.3 percent, knocking down a pair of prayer three-point attempts that helped push the Jags final surge.

TSU's 12 wins are two more than last year, and the most in the last four years.
