The Texas Southern Lady Tigers broke a 17 year drought by beating Grambling State 63-57 in the first round of the women’s basketball SWAC Championship Tournament in Bossier City, Louisiana. TSU’s last victory in post season was in 1993 when the #7 seeded Tigers defeated the #2 seeded Alcorn State 90-88 in overtime. Four Lady Tigers scored in double-digits to led Texas Southern to the second round in the SWAC Championship tournament. Gabrielle Rosiji scored a game high 20 points and pulled down eight rebounds. NaDosha Strickland and Trikeyia East each had 11 points and Jasmine Cannon scored ten. The game was close for the first nine minutes where the teams got their third tie (12) in the first half. Texas Southern went on a 15-4 run that put them up 27 to 16 at the 4:39 minute mark. The Lady Tigers ended the half with a 10 point advantage (35-25). TSU extended their lead to 16 points in the second half (47-31) after seven minutes of play. Rosiji and Daughtry got into foul trouble and had to back off their aggressive defensive play. The Lady Tigers still managed to keep their double-digit lead until the 1:33 minute mark. Texas Southern won the battle at the free throw line down the stretch and walked away with a six point win. Texas Southern will now face #1 seeded Southern on Friday, March 12 at 5:30pm. |
