Texas Southern athletics took another step to elevate the women’s basketball program by hiring Darren Brunson as associate head coach and recruiting coordinator.
Brunson comes to Texas Southern from UTEP where he began working in the spring of 2002.He played an integral role in helping turn the Miners into a championship caliber program that drew notice both regionally and nationally.The Lady Tigers are looking for him to do the same at Texas Southern.
"I am elated about the addition of Coach Brunson to the Lady Tiger family," said Texas Southern women’s basketball head coach Yolanda Wells-Broughton. "He brings a wealth of knowledge, experience and passion for the game of women’s basketball. Brunson is a very accomplished coach, respected recruiter and athletic administrator. He has recruited Jarecia Hughes, Timika Williams, Charnette Phelps, & Shalana Taylor who were all program-changers for the UTEP program. There are few assistant coaches in the country with a stronger pedigree than Darren Brunson.”

I look forward to working with Coach Broughton, the players and members of the Texas Southern University athletic family. I am totally committed to assisting Coach Broughton in building a basketball powerhouse program that will compete annually for SWAC and NCAA titles.”
Before UTEP, Brunson spent 15 years at Independence Community College where he worked his way up the ranks …serving in many capacities.He came to Independence in 1987 as assistant men’s basketball coach. Before he left, Brunson served as women’s basketball head coach, men’s and women’s basketball academic counselor, assistant director of athletics and director of athletics.
A native of Wichita, Kansas, Brunson graduated from St. Mary’s University in San Antonio, Texas in 1987, with a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration.He later earned his master’s in Administration from Pittsburg State in 1998.
Brunson was one of the best players and point guards in St. Mary’s history, earning induction into the institution’s Hall of Fame in 2004.
Brunson and his wife, Cynthia, have three children (Darius 13, Deion 11, Deiona 2 years).He also has a son Darren, Jr. 23, who lives in the Houston area.
