Academic Enhancement Center

The mission of the Academic Enhancement Center is to develop student-athletes into competent individuals who are prepared to excel in today's competitive environment.  It is the goal of this program that upon graduation our student-athletes will leave Texas Southern University confident, connected, educated and well prepared for the challenges they will face throughout their lives.

The Center is comprised of three main components: Academic Support, Personal Development, and Career Planning and Placement.  it is through the incorporation of these three programs that we seek to develop good citizens and future leaders.

The Academic Support Program tracks the progress of student-athletes, provides an environment for skill development and learning, and  helps each student-athlete develop an individual success strategy.  The ultimate goal of this program is graduation.

The Personal Development Program helps the student-athlete develop into a well-rounded, articulate, and knowledgeable individual through a series of seminars and workshops.  On-campus, local and national experts are brought in to work on skill development and provide information on pertinent issues.  Topics convered include financial planning, nutrition, substance abuse, and etiquette.  A major part of our personal development program includes outreach and volunteering.  Through these programs, student-athletes learn the importance of public service and have the opportunity to make a positive contribution to the Houtson community.

The Career Development Program prepares the student-athlete for successful entry into the career of their choice.  it starts with diagnostic abilities and interest testing that is then used to develop a strategic plan for success.  Workshops and seminars help student-athletes develop the skills necessary to conduct a successful job search.

Recognizing the changing dynamics of the job market in a global economy where a university degree is no longer enough, the Center strives to be a model in academic preparation, personal development, and career placement as we develop the leaders of the future.
