Miranda Lab
The Miranda Lab is broadly focused on the ecology, evolution, systematics and conservation biology of diverse groups of organisms, - from the rainforest of Southeast Asia, to exploring patterns of microbial evolution and diversity in manned space stations. We are currently surveying various genes as phylogenetic and identification markers for fungi. This effort includes evaluation of more than a hundred single-copy orthologous genes for utility in fungal phylogenetic inferences. Over the long-term, we will investigate genes either under positive selection, or purifying selection, in specific environments such as microgravity and radiation. With support from NASA CBER, our lab is also investigating phylogeographic patterns of colonization and speciation among birds endemic to the Philippines. We are closely collaborating with other labs within CBER and elsewhere.
