Roger Guenveur Smith

Roger Guenveur Smith adapted his Obie Award-winning solo performance of A HUEY P. NEWTON STORY into a Peabody Award-winning telefilm, directed by his longtime colleague, Spike Lee.
For Mr. Lee's DO THE RIGHT THING, Mr. Smith created the stuttering hero Smiley, and a gallery of memorable characters in SCHOOL DAZE, MALCOLM X, GET ON THE BUS, and SUMMER OF SAM.
Also among his eclectic range of film credits are DEEP COVER, KING OF NEW YORK, EVE'S BAYOU, HAMLET, ALL ABOUT THE BENJAMINS, FINAL DESTINATION, COVER, TALES FROM THE HOOD, POETIC JUSTICE, FIGHTING, and AMERICAN GANGSTER, for which he was nominated for the Screen Actors' Guild Award.
Television viewers know him from HBO's OZ, K STREET, and UNCHAINED MEMORIES: READINGS FROM THE SLAVE NARRATIVES, the film THE COLOR OF COURAGE, and the network series ALL MY CHILDREN and A DIFFERENT WORLD.
For the international stage, he has also created and performed FREDERICK DOUGLASS NOW, CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS 1992, THE WATTS TOWERS PROJECT, TWO FIRES, IN HONOR OF JEAN-MICHEL BASQUIAT, ICELAND, and, with Mark Broyard, INSIDE THE CREOLE MAFIA, distinguished by the LA WEEKLY as Production of the Year in both its premiere and revival seasons.
In addition, Mr. Smith directed Culture Clash's award-winning RADIO MAMBO.
The University of California and Yale are among the many institutions where Mr. Smith has taught and lectured.
