Admission Requirements: Students wishing to enroll in one of the programs of study leading to an undergraduate degree offered through the College of Liberal Arts and Behavioral Sciences must first gain admission to Texas Southern University through the Office of Admissions. Once admitted, students are assigned to the General University Academic Center (GUAC) until ASSET requirements are fulfilled, deficiencies which are identified at the time of admission are eradicated, and prerequisites established by the various departments in the College are met. The departmental offices provide advisement on courses and requisites related to major and minor programs. Students who need financial aid or assistance should contact the Office of Financial aid at the University. Students in the College who have been enrolled for credit within the year prior to registration are not required to apply for readmission. However, students who have not enrolled for one year or more are required to file an application for readmission and submit transcripts from all colleges attended since their last enrollment at Texas Southern University.

 

Accreditation: All degree programs in the College of Liberal Arts and Behavioral Sciences are accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, and some programs have additional professional accreditation. The Bachelor of Arts degree in Social Work is accredited by the Council on Social Work Education and the Bachelor of Science in Dietetics is accredited by the American Dietetics Association.

 

General College Policy: All students enrolled in the College are required to follow the sequence of courses outlined in their respective major degree plan. Students pursuing undergraduate degrees in the College may or may not be required to declare a minor. The requisites for the various major and minor programs is available in the respective departments.

 

Student Responsibility: Students in the College of Liberal Arts and Behavioral Sciences are required to confer regularly with assigned major department advisors. Beyond this advisement, students are personally responsible not only for selecting an academic program, but also for adhering to all published regulations and requirements of the College and the University, and for completing all degree requirements.

 

Degree Requirements: The College requires all students to follow a core curriculum of 44 semester hours in addition to the number of hours designated by the department for a major program. In addition to completing a major, most students in the College are advised to add a second field of interest or a strong minor.

 

Course Requirements: The completion of a minimum of 120 semester hours with a grade point average of at least 2.00 is required for a degree. Some departmental programs may require additional hours.

 


 

Standard Core Courses - 44 semester credit hours:
English 131 (3), English 132 (3) and SC 135 or 136 (3); Math 133, 134, 135 or 136 (3);

Biol 143 or Chem 111, 131 plus 4 semester credit hours selected from one of the following 8 choices:Chem 112, 132 (4); Phys 141, Geol 141, Phys 215, 235; Phys 216, 236; Biol 135, Biol 136, Biol 246.

English 2-- (3) plus 3 semester credit hours from one of the following 6 choices:

THC 130, THC 231, Music 131, Music 239, Art 131 (3), Art 132, Hist 231 (3),

Hist 232 (3), PolSc 231 (3), PolSc 232 (3) plus 3 semester credit hours from one of the following 7 choices: Psy 131, 131L, Soc 157, Soc 158, Soc 221, Soc 238, Econ 231, Econ 232. CS 116 (3).

 

Other requirements and electives are listed on individual degree plans by each department.

 

Academic Standing: To remain in good academic standing in the College, students must meet the requirements set by the University and are subject to the probationary and suspension policies set by the University. Students pursuing majors and/or minors through the various departments in the College are strongly cautioned that many of the curricula of study offered have specific GPA and grade requirements that exceed the overall good academic standing policy of the University. Students enrolled in such programs must meet these requirements in order to remain in good standing as designated majors and minors in their departments.
