Applications for Student Teaching may be obtained from the office of Student Services and Teacher Certification (Room EB 131). These applications must be filed with the Associate Dean for Student Services and Teacher Certification by the first Friday in April prior to the Summer Term or Fall Semester in which student teaching is to begin. The application deadline for the Spring Semester is the first Friday in November. Applications will not he accepted after the deadlines.

The following requirements must be met prior to acceptance for Directed Student Teaching:

  • completion of all general education courses;
  • an earned GPA of at least 2.50 in all courses taken;
  • evidence of completion of all professional development courses;
  • evidence of having passed a tuberculosis test;
  • approval from the appropriate faculty advisor and faculty chair;
  • passing score on the pre-ExCET examination; and
  • completion of a minimum of 45 clock hours or pre-student teaching experience.

Upon fulfillment of the above requirements, candidates will receive letters of admission to student teaching from the Office of Student Services and Teacher Certification.

Student teaching may be waived if students have served successfully for two years in an accredited school as a regular classroom teacher of record in the specialty area and at the level for which certification is sought. Acceptable experience should be verified on a teacher service record by the superintendent or authorized representative of the employing school district. Students must also pass the field of certification comprehensive examination and must successfully complete (6) semester credit hours of education in lieu of student teaching in the College of Education.
