Texas Southern University » Academics » Law » Admissions Requirements

An applicant must have a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university. He must have an undergraduate grade point average and Law School Admission Test (LSAT) score which, when considered together, demonstrate that he is capable of doing the quality of work necessary for successful performance in the School of Law.

The decision to admit a student is based primarily on the applicant's motivation and intellectual capability as demonstrated by his or her undergraduate record and aptitude for legal study as measured by the LSAT. The admission decision, however, is more complex than the mere rank ordering of applicants on the basis of a numerical formula. Leadership ability, prior community service, work experience, the student's background, extracurricular activities, and graduate study in another discipline are all considered.

The Admissions Committee also determines the applicant's level of motivation by reviewing personal experience that indicates determination, patience, and perseverance. The Committee believes that past success in overcoming an economic and/or educational disadvantage is a prime indicator of motivation.

Letters of Evaluation
Letters of evaluation should come from individuals who know the applicant's academic potential. Moreover, the letters should not only indicate the applicant's potential but also the basis upon which the judgment was made.

Personal Statement
A personal statement must accompany the application for admission. Please refer to the last question on the application. The statement provides an opportunity for the applicant to highlight information requested as well as to offer additional information or insights that will assist in the decision-making process. While representing one's background and potential in a favorable light is an advantage, attention should also be given to addressing areas that might be perceived as weak or less than favorable.
