The Department, located in the General Services Building at the intersection of the 3400 block of Blodgett Street and 4700 block of Tierwester Street, operates 24 hours a day, year-round and is composed of professional law enforcement personnel.
All Public Safety Officers must complete the state certified Basic Course for Peace Officers and pass the State's mandated test. Following successful completion of the course and passing of the test, each officer must pass a drug test, a psychological evaluation and a background investigation prior to appointment.
This appointment allows the officers to exercise enhanced authority, including, but not limited to, the power to arrest based on probable cause, the right to confiscate stolen property, illegal weapons, and controlled substances; and authorization to carry and use a baton. Additionally, police personnel are employed for the purpose of carrying out the provisions of the Texas Education Code and are commissioned as Texas State peace officers, vested with all powers, privileges, and immunities of peace officers, in the performance of their duties. (Articles 2.13 and 14.03 of the Texas Code of Criminal Procedures)
The Department has a strong working relationship with other local law enforcement agencies in and around Harris County. Each year, local agencies work together to investigate and solve several cases involving Texas Southern University community members. The University Department of Public Safety can communicate directly with law enforcement agencies in the area if a serious crime is committed in the University area.
