What is the Summer of Success Program?
The Summer of Success Program is a rigorous five-week academic initiative designed to assist new students in preparing for success in college-level, degree-credit courses. SOS students also receive supplemental academic support (e.g. individual and group tutoring from faculty and peer tutors).

What is conditionally admission?
Conditional admission allows a select group of student that did not met the university’s admission requirements to attend TSU as part of the Summer of Success Program. Students who successfully complete the Summer of Success Program by earning a minimum grade of “C” in all courses will gain admission for the fall 2017 semester.  

How are students selected to participate in the Summer of Success Program?
Students that have applied for general admission to Texas Southern University, but did not meet the minimum requirements for unconditional admission are selected for participation in the Summer of Success Program.

What happens if students don’t accept the conditional admission offer?
Conditionally admitted students who do not participate in the Summer of Success Program will not receive admission into Texas Southern University for the fall 2017 semester.

What are the dates of the program?
July 6, 2017 through August 11, 2017.

What is the cost of the Summer of Success Program?
$900 (includes tuition, housing, meal plan, and books & supplies).

Where are payments accepted for the Summer of Success Program?
Payments are accepted through the following options:

  • Online - www.tsu.edu/summer-Payment
  • By mail – submit cashier’s check or money order to
                        Texas Southern University, Office of Student Accounting
                        3100 Cleburne Street, Houston, TX 77004
  • In person – payments can be accepted at the Office of Student Accounting, Bell Building, basement level.
  • Are payment plans available for the Summer of Success Program?
    Yes, students may make payments towards the $900 program fee until the fee is fully paid. The full program fee must be paid by June 16, 2017 to participate in the program.

    Are students able to receive financial aid for the Summer of Success Program?
    Yes, students may complete the 2016-2017 FAFSA application to determine if they qualify to receive financial assistance through the Pell Grant to help pay for the $900 program fee. Student loans are not available for the Summer of Success Program. Financial Aid is not available for the Summer of Success Program.

    How can students register to attend the Summer of Success Program?
    Students who have been conditionally admitted can register to attend the Summer of Success Program online at www.tsu.edu/summer or by calling 713-313-7849.

    Where can students find information about campus housing and meal plans?
    Information about campus housing and meal plans for the Summer of Success Program is available at www.tsu.edu/ssp/campushousing-faqs.php . Please contact Residential Life and Housing at 713-313-7206 for additional information regarding campus housing and meal options.

    What classes are offered through the Summer of Success Program?
    The courses offered during the SOS Program include English, Math, Speech Communication, Fine Art, Computer Science and Freshman Seminar. The University will pre-enroll you in two of these courses, along with the Freshman Seminar based on your TSI assessment exam scores.

    Will students be required to take a placement exam for the Summer of Success Program?
    Unless exempt, students participating in the Summer of Success Program must take the TSI Assessment exam. TSI exemption criteria is available online at http://em.tsu.edu/testing/placementtesting.php .

    Are students required to take the TSI Assessment Exam at TSU?
    No. TSU offers the TSI Assessment Exam through the University Testing Center but the exam is offered at most community colleges in Texas. Please contact the University Testing Center at 713-313-6838 for information on registering to take the TSI exam at TSU or for instructions on how to take the exam at a local community college. The TSI Exam website is http://em.tsu.edu/testing/tsi_assessment.php.

    Are SOS students required to pay the $30 TSI Assessment Fee?
    If SOS students take the TSI exam at TSU, they will not be required to pay the $30 assessment fee. If students take the exam at a community college, the institution may require them to pay their fee for the TSI Assessment exam.

    Where is additional information available for the Summer of Success Program?
    Additional information for the SOS Program is available online at www.tsu.edu/summer or by calling 713-313-7849. Representatives from the Office of Admissions are available Monday through Friday from 8AM to 5PM to meet with students and parents regarding the program. The Office of Admissions is located in the Bell Building, second floor.
