About the Festival

Texas Southern University has partnered with the world renown Monterey Jazz Festival to bring a FREE 4-day intensive Featuring Monterey Jazz Festival Artist-in-Residence, Derrick Hodge. All Houston-based high school music programs are invited to participate in this.

Audition for the Monterey Jazz @ TSU All Star Ensemble

Open to all instrumentalists and vocalists

Submit materials to be chosen to participate. The All-Star Ensemble will get coaching with TSU Jazz Faculty and Artist in Residence Derrick Hodge. At the end of the week they will perform at the final concert and record in KTSU’s state of the art recording studio! The Ensemble will then have the amazing opportunity to perform at the 63rd Monterey Jazz Festival in Monterey, California in September 2020.

Artist-in-Residence Derrick Hodge

Students will have the opportunity to work with two-time Grammy Award winning bassist and Blue Note Records recording artist Derrick Hodge. Derrick has performed, written and/or recorded with such artists as Common, Robert Glasper, Kanye West, Quincy Jones, and Herbie Hancock. For more information on Derrick, check out derrickhodge.com.
